About the 1980 Miracle on Ice
On February 22, 1980, the United States Olympic hockey team — composed almost entirely of amateur and college players — defeated the heavily favored Soviet Union 4-3 at the Lake Placid Winter Olympics in what is widely regarded as the greatest upset in sports history. Head Coach Herb Brooks assembled and prepared the team through an unconventional and demanding approach that transformed a group of college players into a cohesive unit capable of defeating the most dominant hockey program in the world. Team USA went on to defeat Finland two days later to claim the Olympic Gold Medal. The game was later named the Greatest Sports Moment of the 20th Century by Sports Illustrated, and Al Michaels' call — "Do you believe in miracles?
