About the 1980 Miracle on Ice
On February 22, 1980, the United States Olympic hockey team — composed almost entirely of amateur and college players — defeated the heavily favored Soviet Union 4-3 at the Lake Placid Winter Olympics in what is widely regarded as the greatest upset in sports history. Team USA went on to defeat Finland two days later to claim the Olympic Gold Medal. Mike Eruzione, the team captain, scored the game-winning goal against the Soviets in the third period — a moment that has become one of the most iconic in American sports. Jim Craig was the backbone of the victory, making 36 saves against the Soviets and delivering one of the most celebrated goaltending performances in Olympic history. The game was later named the Greatest Sports Moment of the 20th Century by Sports Illustrated.
