About "The Shot Heard 'Round the World"
On October 3, 1951, in the deciding game of a three-game playoff between the New York Giants and the Brooklyn Dodgers, Giants outfielder Bobby Thomson stepped to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning with the Giants trailing 4–2. Facing Dodgers pitcher Ralph Branca, Thomson launched a three-run home run into the left field stands at the Polo Grounds — sending the Giants to the World Series and producing one of the most iconic moments in sports history. Radio announcer Russ Hodges's call — "The Giants win the pennant! The Giants win the pennant!" — remains one of the most replayed calls in broadcasting history.
About the Signatories
Bobby Thomson (1923–2010) played for the New York Giants, Milwaukee Braves, Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox, and Baltimore Orioles during his MLB career (1946–1960). A three-time All-Star, Thomson is immortalized in baseball history for his walk-off home run on October 3, 1951.
Ralph Branca (1926–2016) was a right-handed pitcher who spent the majority of his career with the Brooklyn Dodgers (1944–1953), also playing for the Detroit Tigers and New York Yankees. A three-time All-Star, Branca is best remembered for throwing the pitch that Thomson hit — a moment he carried with grace and dignity throughout his life. Branca and Thomson became close friends and frequently appeared together at memorabilia events.
Leroy Neiman (1921–2012) was one of America's most celebrated sports artists, renowned for his vibrant, expressionistic style and his ability to capture the energy and emotion of athletic competition. His work appeared in Sports Illustrated, Playboy, and at five Olympic Games, and his sports prints are among the most collectible in the fine art world.
