About Hoyt Wilhelm

Hoyt Wilhelm was a true pioneer of the relief pitcher role, redefining what it meant to be a dominant force out of the bullpen across an extraordinary 21-season career. Armed with one of the most devastating knuckleballs in baseball history, he pitched for nine different teams — including the New York Giants, Cleveland Indians, Baltimore Orioles, Chicago White Sox, California Angels, Atlanta Braves, Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Atlanta Braves — and appeared in a then-record 1,070 games over his career. He retired with a career ERA of 2.52 — one of the lowest in the modern era — and never lost his effectiveness even into his late 40s. Wilhelm was the first relief pitcher inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame (1985), a testament to his revolutionary impact on the game.
